About Susan Dowd Stone, MSW, LCSW

On this page is information about my education, advocacy and interests which inform my clinical practice. My goal is to provide you with exceptional mental health services. Your challenges are my life's work. As a former Public Reviewer for the National Institute of Mental Health, I provided feedback on research related to women's mental health treatment. My advocacy and media consultations elevated awareness of perintal mood disorders and helped pass legislation supportive of women's maternal mental health - now included in the Patient's Protection and Affordable Healthcare Act. As a past president of Postpartum Support International, my teams created helpful resources and innovative programs for women experiencing mood disorders. One project was to enlist the many great minds whose pioneering research paved the way for perinatal mental health treatment and enlightenment, resulting in my edited/authored Perinatal and Postpartum Mood Disorders: Perspectives and Treatment Guide for the Healthcare Practitioner, Springer 2008. Since 2008, I have taught in the master's clinical social work program from which I graduated, Silver School of Social Work, New York University. Extensively trained in a variety of evidenced based approaches - including CBT, DBT and IPT - I was pleased to contribute a chapter to a top rated text in this field, Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Clinical Social Work with foreword by Aaron Beck. Through the Office of Global and LifeLong Learning at NYU, I present in the post-master's certificate program, Advanced Clinical Practice . This office also hosts my continuing education self-study webinars. These include Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Veterinary Social Work: Opportunities and Challenges and an updated webinar (available December 2023) on Mindfulness. In addition to work in women's reproductive mental health, I have a life-long interest in the animal human bond www.petlosshelp.org . A former team trainer and evaluator for the Pet Partner Program my dog Dickens and I initiated novel AAT programs on the psychiatric units of three area hospitals. I facilitated an animal companion bereavement group embedded in veterinary practice for 14 years. Mourning Companion Animals; Guiding Clients from Loss to Legacy, Routledge - available spring 2024 - will provide fellow professionals and clients a best practice guide to recovery from such losses. My course on Animal Companion Bereavement in Clinical Social Work will again be offered in January 2024, followed by a two-semester post-masters certificate course in Animal Assisted Interventions in Clinical Social Work beginning in the fall of 2024 in addition to my regular classes. Finally, as a lifelong poet and published writer, my compilation of short stories and poems reflecting the transformational power of animals and the natural world - Forty Chains and Links: The Chronicals of Emmet Collier - will be published in January 2025. All of these immersions -research, writing, advocacy, teaching, clinical work and especially the humbling spirituality of our universal connections - have prepared me to collaboratively guide your recovery toward cherished goals. Women can rediscover inner resources of hope and motivation as together we assess strengths and clarify current challenges. Compassionate and gentle by nature, I will not hesitate to reflect the consequences of inaction, or challenge a pattern which may confound your goals. Currently, sessions are offered via Zoom or telephonically only. When prudence and health guidelines allow, my offices in Closter, NJ and Cambridge, MA will re-open. I am licensed in NJ and MA.
